Internet Marketing Campaign with Inbound Marketing and Social Media

Internet marketing campaign construction is tough- there are hundreds of different ways to approach getting your name out on the web. Do your internet marketing campaign right and people will be beating down your door- do it wrong and you’ve got a permanent record of chatter about how you messed up. Maybe you already have a consistent internet marketing campaign presence on Twitter or Facebook or YouTube. Maybe you only use it for personal communication. But if you want to construct an internet marketing campaign how do you get started using Social Media for Inbound Marketing?

Like anyone who gives advice about social media, start by listening. Then start some conversations. Then figure out how and where your message fits. Then make it happen.

If you are just now discovering all the ways that social media can help your inbound marketing efforts, here are some key resources along the way:

1. Listening: Visit a conference like the Social Media World Forum. Not only will you learn a lot about new tools but you’ll be surrounded by thousands of people who you KNOW use social media all the time. Read books, like Inbound Marketing from Hubspot’s Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah.

2. Start some conversations: I put this before figuring out where you and your message fit because I think it’s important to get your feet wet. You don’t want your first experience in a social media community to be with your company. At this point in the game there are intricate communities with social rules and best practices- I say spend a few weeks learning these things before you put yourself out there. Talk to some people on the networks and let them know you are interested in getting active. Read a blog like Mashable to learn what’s buzzing around the communities.

3. Figure out where your message fits: Find the network that suits your message best- maybe your inbound marketing campaign has a great set of videos that could do well on YouTube. My friend Jay Trainer has been combining cause marketing with environmental consciousness through a YouTube video Green Resolution Raffle that has been building for months now (Full disclosure: I do some social media and writing work for Jay). He’s got a band and wanted to use social media. He’s on Twitter and Facebook too, but his message fits best on YouTube because he can make a music video. And it’s working.

4. Make it happen: When you move to make your internet marketing campaign happen, figure out a strategy first. If you go blindly into the social media world it can be easy to get lost and wander- know where you fit, how that community works and most importantly, what you want to get out of the campaign.
